Specialization: Quality of literature review

  • The student shows a deep understanding in the history of the field, the evolutionary milestones, in context of an application;
  • The student is able to demonstrate an own vision on the future of the field;
  • Novel Figure-Of-Merit (FOMs) may be proposed;
  • Original classification is proposed.

  • The literature survey should be complete, deep and broad. The student can go beyond the collection of data points, e.g. via comparison of methods, analysis of trends, own vision on the future;
  • The student captures the dominating methods and concepts in the field;
  • The student provides a classification and evaluations of the methods\techniques in the field.;
  • The student discusses the reported work in the context of this state of the art, explicitly identifying (re)used ideas and gaps or challenges that are addressed in the reported work;
  • Figure-of-merit (FOMS) are used to compare different approaches;

  • The literature survey should be broad and go beyond a collection of data points, e.g. comparison of methods, analysis of trends;
  • The student actively uses the chosen literature sources and is able to extract definitions, principles, theories, structures, methods and techniques;
  • The student can identify mile-stone papers which introduce a qualitative step forward in the field;
  • The student should be able to position the work done in a relevant way with the State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) from the literature;
  • The student can provide guidelines to utilization of the literature survey;
  • The student introduces the main figures-of-merit (FOMs) in the field;
  • The literature review is usable for future conference or journal publications.

  • The literature survey should cover the major state-of-the art papers and the student should be able to explain why these papers have been chosen;
  • The student comprehends the chosen literature sources and is able to find definitions principles, theories, structures, methods and techniques;
  • The student can motivate the inclusion of every paper in the literature survey;
  • The literature survey can be used by other students in the future;

  • The literature survey should collect papers relevant for the project and the student should be able to discuss these.
  • The student is able to search in sources, to use terminology from the literature and to quote data and specific facts from papers.
